try to get out. this and more as mornings on 2 continues. >> this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> 7:00 on this tuesday morning, september 26th. i'm gasia mikaelian. >> and good morning. i'm dave clark. let's check your tuesday morning weather. it feels nice outside right now, steve. >> we have a pretty -- pretty quiet conditions although the breeze is picking up in the higher elevations, mount diablo. most of the clouds are to the east. we're set for a warmer day. probably the warmest. today and tomorrow. and then cooler weather will kick in. breeze picking up in the hills around clayton. did i see 23 miles per hour in mount diablo. that makes sense. out of the diamond mines, there have been some good gusts. napa airport, east/southeast. there is a little bit of a breeze at the surface but in the higher elevations it is

stronger. 82 in the city. 59. 70/55 is average. record territory is 94 back in 1992. sunny and warmer today. in fact the 80s -- 70s and 80s over by the beaches. mid-80s around the bay. upper 80s and low 90s inland as high pressure wins out for a couple of days. it is screaming all the way down to southern california, wrapping into a low. they are a little cooler than we are. we get the benefit of the north wind and that takes care of any fog. 50sand 60s. we should warm up quick. 49 another side. yet 62 los altos hills. pacifica is already 64. off shore at the napa airport. sunny and warm day that translates into the 70, 80s and 90s. 7:01. you have been busy all of a sudden. where do you want to start. >> with the east shore freeway, steve, because we had a stalled vehicle 80 westbound at ashby. it didn't stay there too long.

but the traffic is slow in berkeley. it will be slow in richmond as well as you drive through el cerrito and berkeley. about 43 minutes between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. at the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see the traffic is backed up for a 25-minute delay. it is from a 25-minute delay getting on to the bridge. no major issues on interstate 880 north or south as you pass the coliseum. the san mateo bridge, that traffic is moderate. nearby in the east bay commutes, we have a lot of slow traffic still on highway 4. 680 looks good to san ra mope. 880 is still recovering from earlier issues on the way from hayward to fremont. back to the desk. several bay area cities saw a vise in violent crimes last year. >> it went up faster than the national average. leigh martinez is in fremont. tell us more about this. >> reporter: well, we chose the

city of fremont to come to because it did fare the worst in the study in terms of overall percentages of increases in both violent crime and in property crime. now, the fbi violent -- says that violent crime has been increasing across the nation. but four bay area cities surpassed that national average. fremont, berkeley, san jose and oakland. fremont has a population of a little more than 230,000 people. last year the city reported 420 violent crimes. across america, the fbi reports that murder rates are also on the rise. san jose had a 57% increase after reporting 47 homicides last year. that's compared to just 30 in 2015. the city has been very open about its need to hire more police. now, the silver lining in this fbi study is property crimes in

the bay area are significantly down, lower than the national average. and we did get a message back from the public information officer here in fremont who says that she is a little surprised by the numbers. she says they have had an increase but overall crime in fremont is at a low in terms of fremont's history and that residential burglaries are down significantly here in fremont. >> leigh martinez in fremont. thank you. the time is 7:04. fire crews in riverside county still battling a big wildfire just west of corona. it started yesterday afternoon just after 1:00. and quick regrew -- quickly grew from 25 acres to 2,000 acres. it has damaged one home and thousands have been told to evacuate. >> flames were across every hill, all the way around us, swirling embers. it was crazy. >> so far this fire is only 5% contained. we have no word on how it

started. help is slowly making its way to puerto rico where people are trying to recover after hurricane maria left a path of devastation and cut off power to the entire island. supermarkets have start today reopen but customers say the shelves are almost empty. drinking water is nowhere to be found. fema is on its way with generators and supplies. some have criticized the u.s.'s response saying it was slower than the response we saw to the hurricanes in texas and florida. the white house says the response has anything but slow but some lawmakers say they are pushing an aid package through to help puerto rico. these satellite images show puerto rico before and after the storm hit. you can see the island in the before pictures, especially san juan. take a look at the bottom picture. few areas have power. it could take weeks for power to be restored. president trump tweeted about

the devastation in puerto rico saying texas and florida are doing great but puerto rico which was already suffering from broken infrastructure and massive debt is in deep trouble. its old electrical grid that was in terrible shape was devastated. he goes on, much of the island was destroyed with l abouts owed to wall street and the bank that's must be dealt with. the president adds the hashtag fema. several cooling centers will be open in san francisco this week as the bay area is expecting more high temperature. the department of emergency management is making the announcement after the deadly labor day weekend heat wave that we saw. three people died from what appeared to be heat related illnesses. a number of san francisco libraries, community centers and pools will serve as cooling centers as temperatures as steve has been reported are expected to hit the 90s today through thursday. also today on the cal campus, the leader of the

conservative group patriot prayer plans to hold a rally this afternoon on the campus despite free speech week being canceled. take a look at what joey gibson posted on facebook. >> so excited to announce the fact that we're going to be meeting at 2:00 p.m. at the plaza on campus. uc berkeley. the birth place of free speech. i am so excited. i cannot wait. >> now, the group patriot prayer is the same group that canceled the scheduled rally last month at chrissy field at the last minute. hundreds of demonstrators held what they called a victory march at uc berkeley yesterday, celebrating the cancellation of free speech week. a conservative group who had been working with steve miller called off the event that would have featured four days of right-wing speakers. many of the protesters say they want today send a message to

the university. >> there should be no business as usual while this kind of white supremacist is being imposed and we need more disruption in the country. >> these groups want to make a point even though they already won. they already shut down free speech. >> some of the classes were canceled because of the protest. but the demonstration more the most part was peaceful. one was arrested for wearing a mask on campus. local high school students join in on nationwide protests. next, what they did last night while performing the national anthem before the oakland a's game. it's busy out there. we've had a couple of different wrecks that have caused slow traffic. we will tell you more about that east bay commute when we come back.

>> there are reports that the oakland raiders may stay in oakland longer than expected as they wait for the new stadium to be built in las vegas. >> there are signs that the raiders may stay four more seasons, alex. what is going on. >> reporter: four more seasons including this current one. we already knew that the raiders would be playing here at the oakland coliseum at least two more years. now it looks like they may be hanging around even longer than that, possibly through the 2020 season. the team's current contract allows them to play at the coliseum through the 2018 season. according to a report from the san francisco chronicle, the raiders are in the process of negotiating a two-year lease extension with the coliseum authority. the raiders of course are waiting for their new $1.9 billion stadium to be built in

las vegas. according to reports out of nevada, there have been issues with the project centered around parking and transportation. i talked by phone with the head of a grass roots group called save oakland sports. >> no more committed fan base than the oakland fan base. on the other hand, you know, we know they're going to leave. and it -- for me, it is agonizing to know that. you know, you get involved in a relationship that you know is going to end. >> reporter: under the current lease agreement, the raiders pay $3.5 million a year in rent to the city and county to play here at the coliseum. if the coliseum authority works out an extension, it is possible that the authority could ask the raiders to pay even more since the team of course needs a place to play for the upcoming seasons. we should point out some local lawmakers, including city

councilman larry reed are opposed to extending the lease at the oakland coliseum. we will have to see how it it plays out. >> thank you, alex savidge. just last night dallas cowboys owner jerry jones joined his team kneeling with the team before the national anthem. jones and front office executives briefly took a knee before the national anthem was played. the entire cowboys team stood and locked arms for the star- spangled banner. they called it a unity statement in light of trump's comments on nfl players. >> the message of unity and equality was getting pushed aside or diminished by the controversy. >> some 200 nfl players were seen sitting or kneeling before sunday's games. alejandro villanueva now

says it was a mistake. we all saw this. the only steeler seen during the national anthem. the team captains agreed to let him go out front because of his military service as an army ranger. he went out of the tunnel and stopped once he saw the american flag. he was going to turn around and head back to his teammates but the national anthem started. he did not want to be disrespentful, so he stood alone with his hand over his heart. since then his jersey has been the top selling item on nfl.com. last night the oakland unified district honor band made a statement as they played the national anthem before the a's game. many band members kneeled down while they performed. the students say they were protesting racism, police brutality and president trump. to the south bay now where the curfew at levi's stadium is expected to be a topic of discussion at the board meeting tonight. city will consider whether or

not to extend the curfew for nonnfl related events. the 49ers failed in the attempt to get the curfew extended beyond 10:00 p.m. ed cher shereen won't be performing because of that curfew. do you think the curfew should be extended for non-nfl events? let us know on twitter and facebook and on ktvu.com. the time is 7:15. sal is right over there. you've been busy since you came in this morning. everybody behaving on the roads now? >> yes. we have some issues, dave and gasia. but we have slow traffic that is normally always there. starting off with interstate 80. if you're driving on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze, it will take about 40 minutes for to you drive that stretch which is about the time that it normally does. we had a couple of earlier incidents that made it slower than usual. at the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up for a typical

delay of about 25 minutes here. 880 north and southbound in oakland looks okay. right around fremont you will see slow traffic heading south. san mateo traffic is moderately heavy. we had a few minor collisions all over the east bay that have caused traffic problems. on the peninsula, westbound 84 at marsh road, there is a crash. if you're getting off the dumbarton bridge and staying on marsh, you will see slower than usual traffic. there was an earlier accident. and northbound 17 also recovering from an earlier accident we had getting up to highway 85. that is clear out of the lanes but you can see the traffic is backed up kind of a big delay on 17 coming into the valley. 7:16. let's bring in steve. >> sal, thank you, sir. >> you're welcome, steve. >> good morning, everybody. clear skies and a good breeze in the higher elevations. not too much at the surface. sunrise over the big city. it is calm and it will be warm

for everybody. today and tomorrow will be the warmest days by far. then we cool things down by the weekend as the system moving in from the north. the dog walk was quite pleasant this morning in beautiful moraga where it is 56 degrees. that's not bad but it is warmer than the last couple of days. we have low 60s, low 50s, danville, san ramon. also dublin in there. my moraga observation says 53. so close enough. napa, you could add maybe one or two to these or take some off. these are my forecast highs. 89 today in napa. livermore 86 to 90. and the coast which dealt with fog, fog, fog for much of the summer, certainly during fog- ust has a lot of 70sand 80s. it is nice on the coast with 70s and a few near santa cruz

near 08 degrees -- 80 degrees. we start a cooling trend after this. it has been upward since saturday. high clouds continue to zoom down towards a low. part of the system that dropped in here. upper 50s to mid-50s in oakland. one observation in oakland says 62. temperature all over in the city. generally favoring 60s with the component of an easterly breeze. it should be in the 70. they will be in the low 80s. brentwood at 61. 59 san jose. hayward, we are running two to five degrees warmer than we were 25 hours ago. if it feels a little warmer, it is. it will translate into warmer afternoon highs. going parallel to the coast. you can see the cloud cover coming in on the back side of

bit. the nasdaq was down. but it is up. the s&p 500 also holding on to the 2500 level. 2502 right now. up a quarter of a percent across the board. equifax ceo is stepping down. he made the announcement this morning saying he is retiring immediately. it comes amid scrutiny of the security breach at equifax that affected 149 million people. smith's resignation also comes ahead of the chairman of the securities and exchange commission testifying today at a congressional hearing. he is expected to face tough questioning after the sev acknowledged it too was a victim to a hack. a group called the council for education and research on toxics is suing starbucks and 90 other companies. the group claim that's coffee companies are not following a california law that requires warnings about hazardous chemicals. at the center of the discreet

is acrylamide. it carries a possible cancer risk. it is a car sinthe chemical is in coffee but the levels are too low to cause a problem. and a warning for parents as a major recall is being issued for a stroll they are could possibly hurt babies. delta enterprises is recalling nearly 28,000 of its j is for jeep jogging stroller. there a picture of it. a bracket on the stroller's leg can break and kids can fall out. so far there have been four reports of broken brackets. in one case, the child did fall from the stroller and was left with cuts and bruises. and levi's smart jacket goes on sale tomorrow. the jeans company teamed up with google for the creation. the technology will make it easier to do things with their

for some, it has picked up. jake is up in ronard park north. i see 52 now. look at the difference between occidental and bodega bay. 49 and 46. one observation in san rafael is 65. cloverdale is 60. did i see before i stopped reporting some 70s up in the calistoga hills because they have a north breeze. tom smith is on blossom hill. 55 and the furnace is running. for some, it's cool. for others, it is not. 40s in the santa cruz mountains. 53 in soquel. and 51 santa clara. san jose and cupertino are both 60. you get a 10-degree spread. sunny and warmer. 70s and 80s by the coast. mid-80s by the bay.

90s inland. the higher clouds tend to favor southern california and the desert southwest. that's where the low is. that is taking the cooler temps. 50s and 60s. we should be ready to move out on the warmer temps. high pressure flexes its muscle but it will get bumped out of the way until the weekend. until then, 70s and 80s and 90s. but no records. 7:31. where do you want to start with, my friend. >> the east bay commute that. is in full swing. if you're making your way from richmond over to san rafael, there is a backup at the toll plaza. not out of the ordinary but there will be slowing at the richmond bridge toll plaza. not out of the ordinary, again. this commute on 830 is a little slower than usual. we had a stalled vehicle and a couple of minor things. 50 minutes is 10 minutes longer than normal. when you get to the bay bridge, another 25 minutes waiting

before you make it on to the span. i also want to mention that interstate 880 in both directions is looking okay. san mateo bridge might be the bridge for you this morning because the dumbarton bridge, west 84, actually off of the dumbarton bridge at marsh road, there was a crash there. and traffic may be a little slow. we keep watching highway 4. earlier accidents put it behind schedule. as we look at all of the east bay commutes, they're all slow. i don't want to forget the south bay commute. northbound 17 is slow coming into the valley because of earlier issues. so is fur driving into the south bay, another slow day on all of the commutes getting into that west valley. a california group will join amtrak and other rail officials to remind people to be safe at railroad crossings. allie rasmus is live at jack london square where people will be boarding trains later this morning. >> reporter: this is part of a

nationwide effort to raise awareness about rail safety. this rail crossing is very popular area where a lot of pedestrians, cars and trains share the road on a regular basis all hours of the day. this is the spot where later this morning, you may notice more law enforcement officers from amtrak police as well as oakland police. they will start gathering and handing out citations, warnings, flyers, basically getting the word out to people about the dangers of crossing railroads when you shouldn't be. the nonprofit rail safety group california operation life saver says every three hours in the u.s., a person is hit by a train. california is ranked first in the nation for deaths. that's why they're getting the word out about rail safety this morning. they will be teaming up with law enforcement to enforce railroad crossing and trespassing laws. teams will be stationed at crossings throughout oakland all the way to richmond,

handing out information and warnings and citations to any violators. they began with a briefing around 7:00 this morning. over on washington street, the crossing over there. a few minutes from now, we're expecting to speak with someone from california operation life saver about their mission and their efforts this morning. we will have that in the next hour of the somehow. >> thank you, allie. oakland police are searching for a burglar after two guns were stolen from a gun that belonged to a southern california police officer. it happened outside of the black bear diner just after 11:00 yesterday morning. the officer had drove to the bay area to help with the berkeley protest in a city- owned suv. having tores will check footage from two security cameras in the parking lot. neighbors tell us that break- ins the area are not rare. >> i'm kind of nervous. in and out, quick and fast, and get it done and over with and get back in the car. especially with my soon.

i want to make sure that he is safe. >> the law passed in oakland last year that requires police officers to securely lock gun that's are unattended in vehicles. a new ruling will allow a confession by an undocumented immigrant committed of -- accused of murder in the kate steinly case. he was not advised of his rights and they coerced his confession. but he was allowed to sign a confession and kept talking to police. however, an on-camera television interview will not be allowed at trial. defense attorneys argue that the shooting of kate steinly at pier 14 was an accident. tensions between the united states and north korea keeps growing. and north korea released an anti--u.s. propaganda video. it shows a north korean missile launching and blowing up a u.s.

fighter jet and other targets. clips of president trump in the video have a caption calling the president a, quote, mad man. this follows yesterday's comment by the foreign minister that a tweet by president trump was a declaration of war. >> we will have every right to make counter measures, including the right to shoot down the bombers. >> north korea's foreign minister was responding to this tweet from president trump about him and about leader kim jong-un saying, if he echos the thoughts of littlerocket man, they won't be around much longer. the white house says the u.s. has not declared war on north korea. a professor at uc santa cruz says this war of words has a different meaning for the people of north korea. >> so when donald trump makes what may for him be casual throats or empty threats, that

is tied to a nation of unimaginable devastation. >> many north koreans still remember the bombings and civilian deaths from the korean war from 1950 to 1953 which was suspended but never officially ended. a new report from the "new york times" says that many of breeze trump's advisers use personal e-mails. this comes after kushner's lawyer says that kushner used a personal e-mail account for more than 100 work e-mails. six aide, including steve bannon and reince priebus used personal e-mail addresses to handle government information. first daughter ivanka trump used personal e-mail on the job. some democrats have been calling the behavior hypocritical after the president was highly critical of hillary clinton's personal e- mail use while serving as secretary of state.

russians tried to hack into california's election system many back in june, state leaders testified before the dhs who said they notified all states in which security as compromised. but the secretary of state says that dhs informed him just last week that russian entities scanned california's systems for vulnerabilities. he says it is unacceptable that it took more than a year to release that information even if no breach occurred. our time is 7:38. today is national voter registration day, created to boost registration numbers and raise awareness about the importance of voting. events are scheduled all around the bay area today where you can register to vote. most bart stations will have ring to vote tables and so will libraries and community colleges. if you want to see a full list of the register to vote events around the bay area today, go to ktvu.com. the time is 7:38.

republicans in washington putting together last-minute efforts to repeal and replace the affordable care act. it looks like they're still coming up short when it comes to getting yes votes. doug luzader has the latest on the efforts to reform health care. >> reporter: we may at the very least see a strategic retreat on this in the senate. the votes just are not there at the moment to repeal and replace obamacare. faced with mounting pressure from protesters on one side and president trump on the other, another republican de fection on repealing obamacare from susan colins. >> to make this sweeping change and deep cuts does not make sense to me. >> reporter: with no margin for error now, mitch mcconnell will have to decide whether to move forward with a vote that will likely go nowhere. >> we will know more tomorrow about where the votes are. >> lindsey graham a driving

from the 7.1 magnitude earthquake where 346 people died. a company based in san francisco say the quake may cost mexico more money than any other natural disaster. the company's report says that mexico's gross domestic product will take a hit in the third and fourth quarters because of the dadly quake. the search for survivors continues. happening today, officials in concord are set to vote on a resolution that would limit cooperation between concord police officers and federal authorities. they will vote on the resolution today. it would make the city the largest in contra costa county to limit the cooperation between local police and ice. just last week officials voted to approve a $1 million program that provides legal assistance to undocumented immigrants. the vote takes place this afternoon at city hall. the chp is releasing new video of two people who robbed toll takers. you see him handing over the

toll money. the entire drawer in fact to a passenger that drives up to the lane and extends his arm. it happened at 4:00 on sunday morning. later that same day, what appears to be the same car shows up at the bay bridge toll plaza. this time it was the driver who robbed the toll collector. >> obviously they're shaken up. anybody would be if you have a gun being pointed in your direction and someone demanding cash. you don't necessarily know what their mind-set is. that's why we take each one of these incidences as serious as possible. >> the car has carmax paper license plates and cromack sents added to the car. toll takers across the bay area have been warned about the robberies and are told to keep an eye out for the black mercedes. if you see the car, call the chp. be very careful using bank

atms. detectives are searching for two warmed robbery suspects. look at this video showing clear images of two suspects on september 8th in a series of atm robberies. in each case, the suspects demanded money from people using atms outside of banks and businesses and a gun was seen in at least one of the hold- ups. >> that's scary. but that makes me feel really unsettled and uncomfortable and not safe coming to, you know, do banking, which such a normal everyday activity. >> now, these robberies occurred at a chase bank in campbell, bank of americas in santa clara and san jose, and at a wells fargo in sunnyvale. the suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the customers. san jose police say the suspect's car is a dark gray, newer model nissan sentra with a spare tire on the driver's side of the car. the time is 7:46. let's help get you out of the

>> welcome back to mornings on 2. it is 7:54. a funeral will be held in tennessee for a woman who was shot at a church on sunday after sunday's services had ended. melanie smith crow was fatally shot by a gunman at the clap he will church of christ in antioch, tennessee, 45 miles northeast of nashville. six others were wounded. police have charged a 25-year- old man in the shooting. the time is 7:54. a boy from modesto, a little boy, is getting a second chance at his elementary school after being suspended for falsely claiming that he had a bomb in his backpack. we told you about jackson riley here last week. he was sent home from school for one day and a letter was issued saying this little kindergartener had made a terrorist threat and it would end up on his school record. the family wanted his record

the pavement so people know they need help. all right. our weather is very quiet. also very warm. not record-setting warm. we are getting temperatures that are even nice over by the coast. in fact the coastal forecast doesn't have any fog in it after a summer of a lot of fog. you got through fog-ust. if you're a coastal resident, summer has arrived. 70sand 80s. water temp between 58 and 62 degrees. 58 san francisco to bodega bay. mid-80s around the bay and upper 80s, low 90s for some inland. everything is coming down as far as the airflow out of the north. that accepts down higher clouds. the bulk is taking residence in southern california and the four corners wrapping into a low. they are cooler than we are. 50s and 60s on the temps. the north wind picked up in the higher elevations. 47 in mount diablo. the fog is out there but it has

too much resistance. the ridge of high pressure will get bumped out about probably not until late thursday, early friday. upper 80s and low 90s inland. you were focused on the east bay last time. you're going to go south bay. >> east bay, south bay, peninsula. although the east bay is kind of trying to, you know, take all of the attention with all of the slow traffic, steve. i want to show you how long it will take to get from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. it is taking almost an hour. that is becoming somewhat routine unfortunately. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza. more time to get to the bridge. and finally when you make it on to the bridge, it looks okay across the bridge into san francisco. 880 northbound is slowing out of san leandro into downtown oakland. we have a lot of low traffic on highway 4 and 680 from concord all the way down into alamo. but 880 we are off to a slow start this morning. it never recovered after all of

the crashes. we had a problem getting across the dumbarton bridge. there was an accident near the facebook campus. and the traffic is still slow. but that is where the accident was. it is still slow on 84 at the facebook campus there. we do have traffic that will be okay on some of these freeways. but northbound 101 i think is really -- well, it is very, very slow all the way up into mountain view. 8:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. several bay area cities had an increase in violent crime. violent crime in the bay area rose faster than the national average. leigh martinez has the story from fremont. >> reporter: we are in fremont which fared the worst in the fbi report in terms of overall percentages. fremont saw an increase in both violent crimes and property crimes. the fbi found violent crime was increasing across the nation.

the cities are fremont, berkeley, and san jose. fremont has more than 230,000 people and there were 420 violent crimes. across america, the murder rates were on the rise. san jose had a 57% increase after reporting 47 homicides last year. that is compared to just 30 in 2015. the city has been very open about its need to hire more police. and the silver lining in the fbi report is that property crimes in the bay area are down significantly, less than the national average. now, we did talk to someone with the fremont police department who says that she is surprised by the numbers. she knows that some crimes have increased but she says residential burglaries have sharply decreased and that overall fremont is doing better in terms of safety than in years past.

in fremont, leigh martinez, ktvu fox 2 news. >> the time is 8:05. let's move to southern california where crews are battling a large wildfire. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon in riverside county west of corona. it quickly grew there 25 acres to now 2,000 acres. gigi brings us more. >> reporter: the canyon fire continues to grow in core own a you see it growing in the fields. it is above montana ranch, if you're familiar with the area. it started at 1:00 yesterday afternoon around the 91 freeway. by 3:00, it was raging. moving quickly fueled by dry brush and being pushed in different directions by erratic santa ana winds with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. at last count, the fire had burned 2,000 acres and only 5% contained. those numbers expected to go up later this morning. at least one home and a big rig's trailer have been

destroyed. and overnight, the fire fight continued on the ground and from the air with water drops. mandatory evacuations in the neighborhoods are still in effect. affecting about 1,000 residents in the dominguez ranch area of corona. the fire also prompting school closures this morning at least four schools. as to how the fire started, well, that is still under investigation. in corona, reporting for ktvu fox 2 news, i'm gigi. president trump will visit puerto rico on tuesday, saying the island was hit as hard as you can hit. help is slowly making its way to puerto rico as people try to recover from hurricane maria where power was cut off to the entire island. supermarkets have started to reopen but the shelves are just about empty. drinking water is nowhere to be found. fema says airplanes and ships are on the way with meals, water and generators as crews

work to restore power. some democrats have criticized the response saying it was slower than the hurricanes in texas and florida. the white house says its response has been anything but slow and that some lawmakers say they are working to push an aid package through to help the people of puerto rico. these satellite images show puerto rico before and after the storm. the ones on the top are the before photos. look below. few areas have power. the power could take weeks, likely months to be restored. president trump tweeted about the devastation in puerto rico saying, quote, texas and florida are doing great but puerto rico which was already suffering from broken infrastructure and massive debt is in deep trouble. he goes on to say the old electrical grid was devastated. much of the island was destroyed with billions owed to wall street and the banks which sadly must be dealt with. food, water and medical are top priorities and doing well.

month at chrissy field. hundreds of protesters held a victory march to celebrate the cancellation of free speech week. it took place after a conservative group who had been work withing milo yiannopoulos called off the event that would have featured four days of conservative speakers. many of the protesters said they wanted to send a message to the university. >> there should be no business as usual while this kind of terror is being imposed. we need much more civil disobedience and disruption in the country. >> these groups want to make a point even though they already won, they already shut down free speech. >> classes at cal were canceled due to the protest. it was mostly peaceful. police arrested one protester for wearing a mask on campus. local high school students join in on a nationwide protest. what oakland students did last night while performing the

imagine what we can do for the conditions that affect us all. imagine what we can do for you. >> there's word this morning the raiders might end up playing in oakland a lot longer than anticipated. >> they may in fact have to stay in oakland until the 2020 season as it waits for the new stadium to be built in las vegas. alex savidge has more on what is delaying the big move, alex. >> reporter: sort of an extended good-bye for the oakland raiders even though we know they are heading to las vegas. they could be playing football here at the oakland coliseum for four more seasons, including this one. the team's current contract will allow them to play at the coliseum through the 2018 season. according to a report out from the san francisco chronicle, the raiders are the process of negotiating a potential two- year lease extension with the coliseum authority to play here

through 2020. the raiders of course are waiting for their new $1.9 billion stadium to be built off of the las vegas strip. according to reports coming out of nevada, there have been issues with the prong centered around parking and transportation near that new stadium. the head of the grass roots group save oakland sports told me this morning that the raiders' delayed departure could be beneficial to the city and county. >> the question is, will this bring in additional revenue for oakland? you know, i think that's the fundamental question. i think that -- i think that the city should approve the lease one more year. >> reporter: under the current lease agreement, the raiders pay $3.5 million a year in rent to the city and county. now, if the coliseum authority works out an extension there, it is possible that they could

ask the raiders to pay more in rent since the team would be in desperate need of a place to play for sort of the interim time period until the new stadium is finished in las vegas. there are some local lawmakers including larry reid who essentially have said they don't want to extend the raiders lease here at the oakland coliseum. as we understand it according to the report out, there are ongoing negotiations to extend the lease through 2020 season. a lot to sort out here. we will see what plays out. potentially the raiders playing here for four more years. last night the cowboys owner jerry jones joined the team in kneeling before the national anthem. >> jones and the front office executives briefly took a knee before the anthem. the entire cowboys team then stood up and locked arms for the playing of the anthem.

the cowboys called this a unity statement in wake of president trump's comments about nfl players who don't stand for the anthem. >> the message of unity, the message of equality was getting if you will pushed aside or diminished by the controversy. >> president trump's words led to some 200 nfl players sitting or kneeling qualify the games on sunday. analejandro villaneuva was the only steeler that stood during the anthem. the captains agreed to stand with him but they were running late. he went out and saw the american flag. he was going to turn around and head back but then the national anthem start today play. he did not want to be disrespectful so he stood alone with his hand over his heart.

commute is slow everywhere. i got a lot of response, yeah. it took me three hours to go 20 minutes. that is the kind of unfortunate commute we're seeing. usually helped by an accident or two. this morning, we haven't had that many crashes. just a couple of things going on. southbound 880 the same thing goes. you can see traffic is slow from hayward to fremont. there was a crash here but this is becoming normal stop and go traffic driving through the area. no major issues driving through. if you are looking at some of the other commutes, the bay bridge toll plaza, that is going to be backed up this morning as you drive for about a 20-minute delay before you make it on to the span. that commute is kind of normal. and we do have slow traffic in oakland on 880 northbound as you drive past the oracle arena getting into downtown. it has become a normal thing to see a lot of slow traffic in this hour. at 8:18, let's bring 234 -- bring in steve. >> we were just discussing

safety campaign called operation clear track. you can see at the jack london amtrak station, they have signs set up. the organization behind it is called operation life saver. they have statistics out here where they are pointing out to people that every three hours in the u.s. a person or vehicle is hit by a train. now, we will be speaking with nancy who is from operation -- california operation life saver. aaccording to their statistics, california ranks number one in the country for these types of what you call trespassing casualties. what are those and why is our state having a problem with them. >> trespassing casualties are any time a person, a pedestrian is on the tracks where they don't belong. tracks are private property. and so sadly in california we're number one. and we think it's because we're such a distracted society and people don't realize that it is trespassing any time that they're on the tracks. >> and it is a safety issue as well. do people underestimate how quickly the trains come by?

it seems surprise that this could happen so often. >> absolutely. they do underestimate. they don't realize -- think about when you see a plane coming in from a different angle and you think it is moving slowly when it's going to land. the same perception with trains. if you're standing at a crossing or near the tracks and you see a train coming down, you can't judge the distance. there's no way to tell what the distance would be on how fast the train is really coming. it takes amile or more sometimes to stop a train. that is 18 football efforts. >> it includes an uptick in enforcement. what is the penalty? can you face a citation. >> absolutely. what is happening today is very special. this is called operation clear track. across the united states, over 240 police departments are running enforcement exercises at crossings. it is the largest initiative law enforcement initiative that has ever happened in the united states. california is partaking in that

breach at equifax that affected 143 million people. now, smith's resignation comes ahead of the head of the securities and exchange commission testifying today at a congressional hearing. he is expected to face tough questioning after the sev acknowledged that it too was a victim of a hack. the bay area economy continues to grow. in fact, it is growing so fast it nearly tripled the national rate. according to the latest reports on economic activity, the bay economy grew 35.2% last year. it brought in $187 billion in domestic products. san jose, that area saw the strongest growth because of the fact that it is home to many of the biggest tech companies. united airlines trying something new to address overbooked flights. the airline is going to let passengers make a bid on a price to give up their seats. it is part of a test to begin next month in response to the
